A Steel City Where Big Trucks Still Rule the Roads

Heavy Duty Towing in Youngstown means recovering semis, box trucks, buses, RVs and equipment in a city of 60,068 people (2020 census) that sits at 856 feet on the Mahoning River, about 60 miles from both Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Dispatch answers 24/7. When you call (330) 542-5961, tell us the road, the direction, the nearest exit or cross street, and what kind of unit you are driving.

The freeway loop around downtown

Most heavy calls in the city come back to one freeway system. I-680 enters Youngstown at about milepost 2 and skirts the southern edge of downtown. The Madison Avenue Expressway and the Himrod Avenue Expressway close the loop around downtown and the Youngstown State University campus. The expressways are short, tight and busy, with ramps that come up fast.

These are the exits drivers name to us most often, from the I-680 exit list:

  • Exit 3A: SR 711 north to I-80 east and Martin Luther King Boulevard (US 422)
  • Exit 4A: SR 193 and the Madison Avenue Expressway toward US 422
  • Exit 6B (signed exit 6 northbound): US 62 east and SR 7 north on the Himrod Avenue Expressway
  • Exit 7: South Avenue to US 62 and SR 7
  • Exit 9: SR 170, toward Struthers

If you can read us the exit number or the last sign you passed, we know where to send the wrecker and where to stage it.

Where the freight comes from

Youngstown made its name in steel. The Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company ran the Brier Hill Works in the city, with two blast furnaces and plate mills. That site went through several owners and was sold to Vallourec in 2002. Vallourec Star Steel and Trivium Packaging are named as the largest industrial employers inside city limits, and both ship by truck. Steelite, a British ceramics maker, has its U.S. headquarters here as well. That mix means flatbeds, coil and pipe loads, box trucks and dry vans moving through the city every day.

The regional airport sits about 11 miles north of the city, in Vienna Township. SR 11 exit 54 (King Graves Road) is the interchange that serves it.

Snow, ice and long winters

Youngstown averages 67.8 inches of snow a season. December 2010 brought 53.1 inches in one month, and the snowiest winter on record, 2010-11, reached 118.7 inches. Temperatures fall to 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below on about four days a year, and freezing has been recorded in every month except July. A loaded tractor-trailer on a wet ramp in January is a different recovery than the same truck in June. Expect winching, chains, and slower, careful pulls when the roads are glazed.

What we recover in the city

  • Jackknifed and rolled tractor-trailers
  • Box trucks wedged under or against low structures
  • Buses and motorcoaches with mechanical failures
  • Dump trucks and equipment haulers off the shoulder
  • RVs and motorhomes that cannot be driven

We use heavy wreckers, underlifts and winch lines for the pull. For rollovers we bring the right gear to upright the unit and clear the lane, and we coordinate with police and traffic control at the scene.
