A Crossroads Town with a Fairground
Heavy Duty Towing in Canfield serves a city of 7,699 people (2020 census) at the crossing of U.S. Routes 62 and 224 in Mahoning County. It sits at 1,116 feet, south of Youngstown. Canfield is not an industrial town, but trucks come through all the time: through traffic on two U.S. routes, delivery trucks to local businesses, and one very large weekend every year. If a rig is down in or near town, call (330) 542-5961.
One intersection, four directions
The middle of Canfield is the meeting point of US 62 and US 224. State Route 46 overlaps US 62 for a short stretch through town, and SR 46 also meets US 224 on Main Street, so a lot of routes pile into a small downtown. A tractor-trailer that stalls at that junction blocks more than one road.
On the east side, the SR 11 freeway enters Mahoning County and runs along Canfield's eastern city limits. Exit 27 (SR 46) and exit 34 (US 224, toward Canfield and Poland) are the SR 11 exits drivers use to reach town. Tell us which way you were headed so we know which side of the freeway to approach from.
Fair weekend
The Canfield Fair is held over Labor Day weekend at the Canfield Fairgrounds. The fairgrounds also hold Canfield Speedway, a half-mile dirt oval that appeared on the NASCAR Grand National schedule in the 1950s. When a large event fills the local roads, a disabled truck is harder to reach. If your trouble is on fair weekend, tell us which gate or road you are near, and expect the dispatcher's arrival estimate to reflect the crowd. Event traffic, trailers and RVs share these roads with through traffic.
History in brief
Canfield Township was established in 1798 and took the name of land agent Judson Canfield in 1800. Canfield became the Mahoning County seat in 1846 and was incorporated in 1849. The Ohio legislature moved the seat to Youngstown in 1874. Early goods were hauled by wagon about 55 miles from Pittsburgh, and the Beaver Canal later served commerce. The War Vet Museum is in the city's oldest structure, and Loghurst, a farm museum, holds the oldest remaining log cabin in the Connecticut Western Reserve.
Typical Canfield calls
- Tractor-trailers on SR 11 or on the approaches to the US 62 and US 224 crossing
- RVs and motorhomes that cannot be driven, especially around events
- Buses and coaches with mechanical failures
- Box trucks making deliveries on Main Street and nearby streets
- Farm and equipment haulers on country roads around the city
In a tight downtown, we match the equipment to the street and pick the approach carefully.
