Big Equipment, Small City
Heavy Duty Towing in Campbell fits a city that has always lived around heavy machinery. Campbell had 7,852 residents in the 2020 census and lies directly southeast of Youngstown, on the north bank of the Mahoning River in eastern Mahoning County. The streets are compact and the industrial ground is large, so we plan each recovery around the exact site. Call (330) 542-5961 with your address or the nearest cross street.
What the Campbell Works left behind
In 1902 the Youngstown Iron Sheet and Tube Company built a plant near the Mahoning River. It became the Campbell Works, with four blast furnaces, twelve open hearth furnaces, two Bessemer converters and a 79-inch hot strip mill. From 1937 until 1979, molten iron was shipped by rail from Campbell to the company's Brier Hill Works in Youngstown.
On September 19, 1977, the company abruptly closed the Campbell Works and furloughed 5,000 workers. Locals call it Black Monday. Industrial ground like this is often private, so we ask whether you are on a public street or private property when you call.
Getting here
The routes people name most are SR 289 and SR 616. The junction sign at SR 289 and SR 616 in Struthers points toward Campbell and Lowellville. SR 289 is a 9.93-mile route that ends at the Pennsylvania state line, about half a mile east of Lowellville. I-680 exit 9 (SR 170) serves neighboring Struthers. Because Campbell sits between Youngstown and Struthers along the river, directions can be vague. Give us a street name, not just 'near the river.'
A name and a riot
The city was first called East Youngstown, a name found on real estate deeds from 1902 to 1926, and the village was incorporated in 1908. It was renamed Campbell in 1926 for industrialist James Anson Campbell. In 1916, a strike turned into riots that burned most of the business district, and National Guard troops ended it. The company then built townhouses that Wikipedia describes as the first prefabricated concrete home development in the world. Campbell is nicknamed "Soup City" and "A Small City With a Big Heart." Many early immigrants were Greek.
The river and the valley
The Mahoning River, which Campbell sits beside, is 113 miles long and joins the Shenango River near New Castle, Pennsylvania. The valley has a long steel-making and coke-producing history. For a recovery, the practical point is that low, flat ground near the river may be soft or wet after heavy rain. Tell us what the ground is like where you are stopped.
Calls we run in Campbell
- Dump trucks and equipment haulers on narrow streets

- Heavy equipment that must be loaded or recovered on riverside ground
- Buses and church or school charters with breakdowns
- Salvage and non-running units that need to be moved
We use heavy wreckers, underlifts and winch lines, and bring lowboy or landoll hauling when equipment has to be moved.

Tell us the address, unit type and weight, what you are hauling, and what went wrong. If you are on private ground, tell us the gate and who we call on arrival. Campbell Questions
Can you recover a truck from private industrial ground in Campbell?
Yes. Tell us the address, the gate and who to ask for. We confirm access before the wrecker rolls.
How do I describe my location if I am near the river?
