A County Seat Built on Making Things

Heavy Duty Towing in Warren serves the Trumbull County seat, a city of 39,201 people (2020 census) on the Mahoning River, about 14 miles northwest of Youngstown and 56 miles southeast of Cleveland. Warren has a long history of manufacturing, so its freight has always been heavy. If your truck is down in the city or on the SR 82 bypass, call (330) 542-5961.

The bypass and the city streets

SR 82 runs on a freeway that bypasses Warren and continues east to the SR 11 freeway. The route becomes a freeway for about ten miles, shared with SR 5, as it bypasses the city. US 422 and SR 45 run through the city, and SR 46 skirts its eastern edge. SR 5 heads southwest toward the Ohio Turnpike (I-80). The SR 82 and SR 11 interchange is exit 51 on SR 11, a modified cloverleaf.

That gives trucks a choice: the bypass, or the city streets. A disabled semi on the freeway is a traffic-control job. A disabled semi on a city street is a lane-and-driveway job. Tell us which one you are on.

What makes the freight

Packard Electric and the Packard Motor Car Company were both founded in Warren in the 1890s by brothers James Ward and William Doud Packard. The city was reportedly the first in the U.S. with electric street illumination, supplied by Packard Electric. Trumbull Steel became part of Republic Steel in 1928, and its former mill operated under various owners until 2012. Current major employers include St. Joseph Warren Hospital, the Tribune Chronicle and Thomas Steel Strip. In 2024, Kimberly-Clark announced a new production facility in Warren.

Nearby, the Lordstown Assembly plant was built after GM cited its access to the Ohio Turnpike when it bought the farmland in 1955. The plant has changed hands several times since GM stopped building cars there in 2019, and Foxconn now operates it under a long-term lease.

Weather

Warren averages 40.81 inches of precipitation and 27.9 inches of snow a year, per Wikipedia's climate table. The record high is 105 degrees Fahrenheit and the record low is minus 26. Ice on a bridge deck or an exit ramp is a winter risk even in a year with modest snow. We ask about ice before positioning a wrecker.

Back story

Ephraim Quinby founded Warren in 1798 on 441 acres bought from the Connecticut Land Company. It became the Trumbull County seat in 1801. Construction of the Trumbull County Courthouse began on Thanksgiving Day, 1895. By 1888, four railroads connected Warren with other parts of Ohio. The city's motto is "Historic Capital of the Western Reserve."
